Abstract

Management of dance movement elements needs to be considered to maintain endurance and movement quality. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of applying diaphragmatic breathing on dancer endurance. Uses mixed methods with an exploratory sequential design. The first is qualitative to find hypotheses regarding the problem of dancers' endurance in performances in choreography courses. The second tested the hypothesis through experiments using control variables between group 1 who were trained in dance movements using diaphragmatic breathing and group 2 who were only trained in movements. An experiment was carried out at the Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh. So, the research subjects were 6 female dancers who took choreography classes, were divided randomly into 2 groups, and had never used diaphragmatic breathing techniques when dancing. The model used a sphygmomanometer and oximetry measuring. The endurance test was carried out by dancing using a metronome for 5 minutes at each tempo of 100, 110, and 120 without stopping. The results of the study showed the respiratory frequency of dancers who used diaphragmatic breathing was more stable than the group that did not use diaphragmatic breathing. These findings can be used as recommendations for maintaining body endurance for dancers by alternatively applying diaphragmatic breathing when dancing, especially for students in The Indonesian Institute of Cultural Arts in Aceh.

Abstract

Cultural museums have always been considered gatekeepers of culture, putting forth the main concepts of cultural preservation and conservation. This paper explores the challenges faced by two cultural museums from various perspectives and examines the transformation of museums to support Papuan culture through conservation and preservation values based on the experiences and views of the participants. This study is qualitative research employing an interpretive strategy, with museum personnel, cultural agencies in Papua Province, academics, and teachers from Cenderawasih University as participants. Data were collected using in-depth interviews, field observations, and literature studies. The study identified three themes: (1) Collection and space management, (2) Museum image, and (3) Human resources capacity building and moral responsibility. To improve cultural services, the study suggests that museums in Papua need to focus on strengthening museum collection management, providing visitor convenience, and increasing staff support in the cultural field.
